Yes it is the most important thing you can do if you want to be happy.

Bold Statement BUT Ridiculously True!

So this is not going to be one of those emails that pretends that just because the clocked turned past 11:59pm on December 31st that all will be swimmingly perfect because its now 2013.

We all know it doesn’t work like that, but for a lot of people it does offer the chance to wipe the slate, reflect and start a fresh. To be honest that opportunity is there for us all even if we are happy.

That’s what it boils down to are you happy? If not something has to change. Remember insanity is doing the same things expecting different results, I didn’t make that up, a gentleman called Einstein did. You know him?!

At this time of year we see all sorts of goals and targets set by individuals and organisations, but what where they fail is that they underestimate the “ WHY”.

Why do they want to be 10-14lbs lighter?

Why do they want to run more marathons?

Why do they want to get below 10 stone?

You see what we do with our Personal Training clients in the early stages of their time with us is a process known as “peeling the onion”.

We help our clients to truly understand what is the driving force behind their perhaps initially vague on unspecific goals.

This is something we re-address once a goal or target is achieved.

In short you need to keep asking yourself why, if you are doing this by yourself get a pen and paper now and record each step.

At the end check to see if the goal still excites you……if not then perhaps that goal is not for you.

If it does, then there’s a fair chance you will be far more excited as a result of doing this.

Why? Why? Why?

Because now you truly understand what it is the driving force behind your perhaps initially vague statement.

We used to use SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time framed) to help set goals but this really doesn’t work anything like as effectively as the one Mike and I use with our clients QUEST .

In this we help our clients dig deep and it can be emotional.

  1. Qualify
  2. Understand
  3. Educate
  4. Stimulate
  5. Test

 

QUALIFY– You for Goals & Goals for You

–        How important is this goal to you?

–        What will it mean to you?

–        How are you going to feel?

–        How will these change things for you?

–        How will this change your life?

–        Must be excited about what’s about to happen

UNDERSTAND– Do You Truly Understand

–        Do you and your trainer truly understand what you need/want?

–        Keep digging until you are both clear

–        ‘Peel the onion’

EDUCATE– Every Goal Becomes Much More Exciting When You Attach Education

–        What do you think you need to do to achieve this?

–        Are you completely aware of what you need to do to achieve your goals (exercise/health related)

–        Educate on EVERYTHING they need to do

–        Are they fully aware of all the COSTS (not financial)

  • DOMS/time/fatigue/ training volume etc

–        Are you the client willing to pay the “metaphorical price?”

STIMULATE– Keep the Goals at the Top of Your Consciousness

–        Create excitement – re-evaluate

–        Can you imagine…

–        What will you feel like?

–        What will that mean to you?

–        If you are not excited then this is the wrong goal.

TEST

–        Find out what your action is going to be?

–        What is the smallest step you could take right now?

So there you have it. I promise you if you use this in all aspects of your life you will be HAPPY!

That’s what its all about….its more than losing weight, its more than being under 10 stone. Its about creating happiness for you and those around you.

You don’t have to be an over achiever, you don’t have to be setting the world alight with international movements. You just need to know what you want!
