Running Around on Peanut Butter and M&M’s

If you want a great example of the notion that you can’t out train your bad diet then you should have a read of Sophie’s story that she sent over after we started working together last month. Previously having been running around on M&M’s and peanut just wasn’t working for her!

Have a look here……..

She says it all, but here are a few points that I think you should know about.

  1. Most of us aren’t full time athletes

Not that an athlete would try to out train their bad diet….that’s not what I am saying here.

Using meals/ drinks as rewards for going to the gym is not the way to get in great shape and feel good. By all means, celebrate on a big occasion…why wouldn’t you….but to justify your weekly/daily BINGE on the back of a “hard” training session wont get you results.

Eating high calorie, low nutrient density products will lead to disappointment and disillusionment.

Don’t kid yourself…..just accept WHAT IS and do WHAT IS necessary to get the result you want.

  1. Its impossible to perform at your best on poor fuel.

Would you put poor quality deisel fuel in your petrol car?

To effectively change your physique and get the muscle tone we all want deep down we need to eat well and nourish our bodies.

Training is a reason to eat well, not an excuse to eat rubbish!

When training we want to get the most from that session, that doesn’t mean it has to be FLAT OUT by the way, in fact it can be the opposite but either way you wont have your best energy levels. Eating a high sugar diet can affect your sleep patterns and therefore repair hormones.

The perfect combinations after training are carbohydrate and protein for optimal recovery. At this meal I like to keep fat content a bit lower as that will slow down the absorption of the protein and carbs and therefore your recovery rate.

Sweet potato and chicken with all the spices you like would be just one example.

  1. Starvation / Restriction based diets NEVER work!

They wreck metabolisms, they cause huge rebounds and a loss of muscle mass! Oh and you feel AWFUL!

HYPO calorific can be as dangerous as HYPER calorific diets.

Couple intensive training with low calorie intake (more importantly low NUTRIENT), will destroy your lean tissue. Low fat diets are likely to leave you deficient in Vitamin A,D,E,K, essential fatty acids and omega 3’s.

In turn this will leave you unable to produce the energy you need to grow muscle (don’t confuse that with getting bulky…this concerns getting toned)……

Basically what happens is your testosterone and insulin levels plummet and your ability to generate a lean body goes with it!

  1. Isn’t it funny that when you are eating well, you feel like doing “stuff” (training).

Unhealthy choices normally lead to less drive! When you eat well, you feel like moving more and when you move more, you feel like eating well. Its like a double edged sword.

The phenomen “HANGRY” is not far out…….NO CARB diets make for antisocial people…therefore you wont want to train.

The exercise is like lighter for a fire….it finishes off the process….but the wood, the coal and the oxygen (FOOD/FUEL) are what facilitates it!

It doesn’t have to be perfect but sometimes I meet people who unfortunately are WAY OUT in terms of their approach!

If you need help, please don’t be afraid to ask…that’s what I am here doing each day, so that you haven’t got to try and become the expert in a MINEfield!
