My Mistake + Sandhurst Update

Good Morning,

Firstly before we get into this pretty cool story below…..the seminar at my studio is on MONDAY 8th of FEBRUARY at 7:45PM (not am as I made the mistake of writing yesterday). To book a seat just email me (info@fa-fitness.co.uk).

Ok so when someone approaches me and they only have 1 month to get ready…..I often wish they had come a bit earlier to A) get a better result and B) enjoy the experience that getting fit brings, which is much better when you aren’t rushing……

This was a little different, largely down to the fact that Ross was willing to listen and change the way he was doing things, in order to get BETTER.

BUT this one was a bit unique…..enjoy what Ross has to say about what we got up to prior to his Officer training commencing in January this year. At the end I will lay out a few reasons why this was successful!

I started training with Matt on December 10th, a month before my start date at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, I’d already worked on my fitness levels throughout the year, but the progress was slow and I found it hard to find the motivation to do Cardio work. I attended my Pre-Course for the Army where I knew I had to complete a Personal Fitness Assessment (a test consisting of a 1.5 Mile run, a minimum of 44 press ups in 2 minutes and 50 sit ups in 2 minutes), which I knew I could do, though was unsure of how comfortably.

I passed, though really wanted to push myself to be able to do better for my re-test when I officially started. My mum, already a client of Matt’s, suggested trying a few personal training sessions, knowing that I was lacking an idea of how to specifically train to meet my goals.

Shortly after messaging Matt to enquire about what he had to offer, he phoned me to discuss my goal, his training methods and ideas he had, I went up for a session just to assess and discuss what I required and from there we set up a series of 5 personal training sessions over the 4 week period, 3 in week 1 and 2 in week 4, with a personal training plan set up throughout.

The sessions were hard, but in good way, each routine was enjoyable and at no point did I feel that anything was unachievable. Each session was different and knowing I wasn’t keen on cardio/running aspect of training Matt approached it from a different direction, the home programme was tailored with lots of different things for me to try out keeping it interesting with set test days so I was able to track progress and the personal sessions were challenging, with Matt able to help me out with form, give motivation and advice as well as enabling me to interact with some new people also focusing on their own fitness goals.

I recently completed the PFA again, I achieved the 1.5 mile run in 9:05 with 72 press ups and 86 sit ups, a considerable increase on my previous effort, and I truly feel I couldn’t have achieved this on my own, Matt showed a genuine interest in what I wanted to achieve and how to get me there and wasn’t put off by the short time frame in which I wanted to achieve it.”

So Ross has basically been tearing up the fitness testing at Sandhurst. Now, I believe that Ross made HUGE gains in the last 4-6 weeks because:

1. He  started to train SPECIFICALLY towards his goal…..moving away from a traditional bodybuilding style session to something that was much more functional.

2. We found ways other than running to improve his running….. get fit to run, not run to get fit….. we introduced lots of whole body, multi joint exercises that mimicked the movements he will do during his officer training, but also improved his single leg strength, balance , core strength and co ordination.

3. We didn’t go CRAZY at each session, sure some were really tough, thats necessary from time to time, a lot of the runs we did weren’t about going FLAT OUT each time, we did intervals, we did short, long, fast, steady…..we used PLANNED VARIETY to get better results than he had been.

4. We got really into recovery techniques, so rather than doing nothing and hoping his muscles would miraculously recover by the next session we had a plan to improve NUTRITION, in particular timing of nutrients. We looked at specific mobility routines to help avoid tension in the hips and lower legs, again improving the way Ross moves.

It was great helping Ross, a top bloke and someone who I am sure will go far in what ever he decides to do.

Have a good day,

Matt 🙂
